Why understanding how you show up energetically is the missing link in leadership effectiveness.
by Amy Fauth, Owner & Principal Coach at OneStep Coaching & Consulting, LLC
A real-world leadership paradox - high achievers burning out, teams underperforming because companies are doing more with less, leaders feeling "stuck" despite their expertise. But listen, it's not your fault. There a leadership gap: skills vs self-awareness + energy management. Traditional leadership training isn't enough - that's why energy leadership is the competitive advantage. Stay with me as we unpack what energy leadership is, why it matters, and how to apply it now.
What Energy Leadership Really Is
You’ve probably read the books. Sat through the seminars. Maybe even aced a few personality assessments. So why, after all that, does leadership still feel… off?
If you’re like most leaders, it’s not because you lack skills. It’s because you’ve never been taught to lead with energy.
Not hustle energy. Not productivity-at-all-costs energy.
But the kind of energy that shapes how you show up, how you respond, and how you lead others — especially when things go sideways.
This is the foundation of Energy Leadership.
Unlike static personality tools like DiSC or Myers-Briggs that categorize “who you are,” Energy Leadership is attitudinal. It’s dynamic. It measures how you perceive and respond to the world around you — and how that perception impacts the people you lead and how you lead yourself.
Your energy impacts your:
Decision-making under pressure
Communication during conflict
Team morale in moments of change
Influence in meetings, projects, and executive presence
Think of it as your leadership frequency. It’s always broadcasting, whether you realize it or not.
Through the lens of the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) — an attitudinal assessment developed by iPEC Coaching — you can identify your dominant energy patterns both when things are going well and when you’re under stress.
It’s about self-leadership first — because how you lead yourself determines how you lead others.
In small businesses and growth-stage teams, this is your edge. Leaders who understand how to manage their energy (and recognize when it’s spiraling into stress-based reactivity) are far more effective at creating calm, clarity, and cohesion on their teams.
As the saying goes: “The room feels you before it hears you.”
Energy Leadership gives you the tools to manage what they feel — and how you respond.
Why Self‑Awareness Is Your Leadership Advantage
Let’s be honest: there’s no shortage of smart, skilled, capable leaders. So what separates the ones who build high-performing, emotionally intelligent, future-resilient teams?
It’s not titles. It’s not tenure. It’s self-awareness — the kind rooted in energetic intelligence.
Most leaders were taught to lead with what they know. But sustainable leadership stems from how well you know yourself — and what energy you're leading from in each moment.
This is where the Energy Leadership Index shines.
According to research from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC), leaders who develop energy awareness see improvement in communication, productivity, emotional intelligence, and even profitability.
Why? Because self-aware leaders are able to:
Recognize stress patterns before they take over
Regulate emotional reactivity during conflict
Shift their energy to match the moment (instead of reacting to it)
Model resilience for their teams
And here’s the truth most leadership programs skip:
You cannot lead others sustainably if you’re not leading your own energy first.
Imagine the ripple effects of leading with calm confidence during a chaotic launch. Or bringing creative collaboration to a stale, burned-out team. Or navigating a difficult conversation with grace instead of defensiveness.
These aren’t personality traits — they’re learned energetic skills.
In fact, one study found that emotionally intelligent leaders (who are highly self-aware) drive significantly higher team engagement, lower turnover, and better business results than their peers.
Self-awareness gives you agility. It lets you respond instead of react, and lead with intention — even when the pressure’s on.
Here’s a practical way to think about it:
Energy in → Leadership out.
The way you show up is the way your team performs.
Whether you’re leading a startup team of 10 or managing a cross-functional department of 75, your energy sets the tone. And the better you understand it, the more influence you have — without working harder or wearing a mask.
The 7 Levels of Energy Leadership
Most leadership models focus on “what to do.” Energy Leadership asks a deeper question: “Who are you being while you do it?”
The Energy Leadership Index (ELI) outlines 7 distinct levels of energy that influence how we think, feel, act, and lead — especially in challenging moments.
These levels aren’t labels. They’re lenses. We all experience every level. The power comes from knowing which one you're in — and how to shift it.
Here’s a simplified breakdown:
*Level 2 Energy and conflict is the most prevalent in Corporate America.
Let’s break a few of these down in real terms:
Level 1 leaders avoid conflict but may withdraw or freeze under pressure.
Level 2 shows up as power struggles, micromanagement, or passive-aggressive feedback.
Level 3 leaders are effective, but often burn out silently because they take on too much to keep the peace.
Level 4–6 is where leaders start to create cultures, not just outcomes — leading with curiosity, shared ownership, and confidence in others.
You don’t need to live at Level 7 (spoiler: you can't).
But even understanding where you default during stress? That’s game-changing.
Reflection prompt:
When your team drops the ball, which energy level do you lead from first?
And what would shift if you responded from Level 5 or 4 instead?
The ELI assessment shows you not only your default energy patterns, but also how dramatically they shift under stress. That insight alone can change how you lead forever.
An Actionable Framework - How to Raise Your Leadership Energy
Okay, so you know your energy affects how you lead.
Now what?
Let’s talk about daily energy hygiene — because just like brushing your teeth, you can train yourself to become energetically conscious before stress runs the show.
Here’s a 5-step method I use with clients to shift energy in real time:
The “R.E.S.E.T.” Framework
R — Recognize the Pattern
Pause and name what level you’re operating from.
Are you shrinking (Level 1), powering through (Level 3), or reacting from blame (Level 2)?
E — Examine the Trigger
What just happened? What meaning are you assigning to it?
Example: A team member missed a deadline. Are you interpreting that as disrespect? Incompetence? Chaos?
S — Shift the Lens
Ask: What’s another possible perspective?
Could this be a growth opportunity (Level 5) or a chance to check in on capacity (Level 4)?
E — Embody a New Response
Take one action aligned with a higher energy level.
This could be a reframe, a conversation, or a conscious breath before responding.
T — Track Your Trends
Leadership is a practice. Keep a weekly journal to note what energy levels you led from most often.
Example:
Let’s say you’re leading a meeting that goes sideways.
People are distracted. Feedback is vague. Tension’s in the air.
Old reaction: Level 2 — “They’re not taking this seriously. I need to take control.”
RESET shift: Level 4 — “There’s something unspoken here. Let me name the energy and open the floor.”
Result: You become the leader who creates space, not holds power.
The Energy Leadership Index Assessment: Your Baseline & Transformation Tool
You don’t need to guess where you are. You can measure it.
The Energy Leadership Index (ELI) is a research-backed assessment developed by iPEC that reveals your current energy distribution across the 7 levels — both in your average day and under stress.
Here’s why this assessment is different from anything else you’ve tried:
It doesn’t tell you “who you are.”
It shows you how you lead, and what’s shaping that leadership. It doesn’t put you in a box.
It helps you identify patterns and possibilities. It’s not abstract.
It’s deeply practical — with coaching insight that ties directly into daily leadership behaviors.

What Happens Next — Applying Energy Leadership to Your Team and Culture
Energy Leadership doesn’t end with self-awareness — it expands outward.
Once you begin shifting your own energy, you start to see where your team is stuck in Level 1 victimhood… or Level 2 blame… or even Level 3 over-functioning.
And because you’ve done the work, you can lead them through it.
Here’s what that looks like:
You normalize emotional range in your team — without tolerating energy drain.
You use curiosity over control.
You coach instead of fix.
You challenge without shaming.
And here’s the best part: you create a team that doesn’t rely on you to carry the weight alone.
Energy Leadership, practiced at the team level, becomes a culture.
A culture where resilience isn’t performative.
Where ownership is shared.
Where people feel seen and stretched.
And that’s where your business grows.
Conclusion: Lead With the Energy You Want Reflected Back
If you take nothing else from this post, let it be this:
How you lead yourself is how you lead others.
Your energy sets the tone before you ever open your mouth.
And if you're not intentionally managing it — you're reacting from habit, not leading from power.
The good news? You can shift it. You can measure it.
You can raise your energetic leadership, and with it — your influence, clarity, and capacity.
So if you’re ready to ditch reactive patterns and lead from a place of confidence, purpose, and aligned power...
